Tutorial: Formatting with Dreamweaver

On this page, you will learn a little more about formatting your document. In particular, you will add a paragraph break, add a horizontal rule, and center more text.

Add a paragraph break

Dreamweaver works much like a word processor when it comes to adding text to the document. This includes (to a degree) adding spacing to a document. To add a blank line after your image:

1. Position your Cursor -- Click your mouse in the space just after the image. Your cursor should appear next to the image (often the cursor in this position will appear abnormally large).
2. Make the new paragraph -- Press the "Enter" key. Dreamweaver will insert a blank line and move your cursor to the line after that.

Add a horizontal rule

A horizontal rule is a line that runs across the text area. To add one, simply position your cursor where you want one to be and click the "Horizontal Rule" button in the toolbar (right).

Center more text

Finally, add another paragraph break and then add some text (which we will turn into links later on:

Our example so far (Click for full size)

1. Add a paragraph break after the horizontal rule by pressing Enter.
2. Add the following text:

   Home || Teaching || Research || Links

   (the vertical line is called a "pipe" and can be found as a shift-character in the upper right part of the keyboard.)

3. Center the new text by selecting it with the mouse and clicking the "Align center" button in the properties window. Now your page should look something like our example (at right).

Now that we've got our page formatted the way we'd like, we'll add links to the words at the bottom.
